Why Tattoo Artists Require Deposits

Getting tattooed is a collaborative process - it combines art, trust, and thoughtful planning from both you and your artist.

-

One of the first steps in your appointment is placing a deposit. If you’re new to tattoos, this may feel unusual, and you’ll probably wonder why this is required.

Deposits are a standard practice across reputable studios in the tattoo industry. They protect both the artist and the client, ensuring that every appointment is treated with the time, preparation, and care it deserves.

So, really, why do they exist?

Drawing and preparation

Tattooing is more than just the time spent in the chair getting tattooed. Each tattoo is a custom piece created specifically for the client wearing it, which means preparation happens well before the appointment day.

A deposit secures your place in my calendar, allowing me to dedicate the necessary preparation to your project.

Appointment protection

Tattoo appointments - especially within private studios- are dedicated time slots that cannot always be filled at the last minute.

Many studios moved away from walk-in business after COVID, and in my case, I have always preferred to work privately. This allows me to give each client my full attention and energy, but it also means I often book out in advance to accommodate the projects I’m working on.

When a last-minute reschedule or cancellation happens, that time is often impossible to refill, which results in a full day of lost work. Deposits protect that time.

Life happens, and sometimes we do need to move appointments. Deposit polices help ensure both the artist and client are respecting the time reserved.

Professional Commitment

A deposit creates a mutual commitment - I commit my time, preparation, and creative energy to your design, and your deposit ensures that you are committed to the appointment as well.

Unfortunately, many artists have experiences where hours go into the behind-the-scenes preparation, only for the client to cancel on the day of the appointment.  Deposits prevent no-shows and ensure both sides are entering the process with respect for each other’s time

Studio costs

Tattooing involves many undisclosed costs that clients don’t always see.

Regardless of whether the tattoo is large or small, there are consistent expenses involved — sterile equipment, single-use supplies, studio rent, preparation time, and design and administrative work.

Deposits help ensure that this preparation can happen without the risk of that time and effort being completely lost due to last-minute cancellations.

What deposit policies are normal?

Most deposits are non-refundable -

Deposits help cover the time spent preparing your design and the reserved appointment slot.

If an appointment is cancelled or a client decides not to move forward with the tattoo, the deposit ensures that the artist is still compensated for the preparation that has already taken place.

Deposits are transferable - usually once, and with given notice

Life happens — illness, emergencies, and unexpected situations occur.

Most artists allow deposits to be transferred to a new appointment date if enough notice is given. In my case, I require at least 48 hours' notice to move a deposit. If emergencies arise, I always try to be understanding and accommodating where possible.

No-call, no-show will result in a loss of deposit-

If an appointment is missed without any communication, the deposit will be forfeited, and a new deposit will be required to rebook.

Deposits ensure that the design process can begin-

Tattoo artists often work on multiple projects at once. A deposit confirms that your project is ready to move forward and allows your artist to begin preparing the design. Placing a deposit is also a sign of trust in your artist’s ability to interpret your idea and create something unique for you.

Deposits create a respectful balance between artist and client. They protect my schedule, allow me to dedicate the necessary time to your design, and ensure that every tattoo receives equal attention.

When you place a deposit, you’re not just booking a slot - you are reserving space for a piece of art that will be made uniquely for you.
